What I’ve Learned from Experiencing a Lay Off
Welcome! I am currently sitting here in my office as I type this. It’s been been almost 60 days since I was laid off. I mean, the writing was on the wall. In fact, if I were in their shoes, I would’ve chose me as well. Whaaaaat? But why TL? Because sometimes, organizations have to make decisions for the better good of the company. And this was 100% the case. I was in a product marketing role. Product marketing is very important, but the work could have been easily disbursed between a few people. So, if it were my choice, I would’ve cut that role as well. But let me tell you what being laid off has taught me:
Getting laid off does not mean that I am not valuable. Unfortunately, RIF’s happen, and in my case, I was happy to leave so others could stay. Your life isn’t over when you lose a job. It could just be the beginning.
It’s given me the time to pause for self reflection. What do I want? What inspires me? How do I better align with my values? What are my short term and long term goals?
Change is a great thing. My personality thrives on change and I forgot this for a while. Sure, is it scary? Yes. Am I going to die? No… I’ll be just fine.
Getting pushed out of my comfort zone was exactly what I needed. I was too comfortable. It’s the scary things in life that help us grow.
I’m learning more everyday than I have in years. Sure, I could lay around and do nothing for a while… But I don’t roll that way. I am a lifelong learner and have the time to spend learning new skills. And it’s been amazing.
How can I serve others. This opportunity has shown me that I need to share my knowledge. I’ve had an amazing career so far and have a lot of information in this old brain that can help other people. Putting the focus on others takes me out of “self” so I don’t hop on the “poor me” train. When in doubt, serve others.
Bottom line. We are all unique and talented with lots to give. We could sit around in self pity town, or we can do something about it. It’s what we DO with our newfound knowledge that sets us apart. This opportunity is a gift.
That’s all you need to do. Make a decision. If that doesn’t work. Guess what you do? You make another decision. And if that’s doesn’t work? You guessed it. We make another decision. That’s it.
